The French City of Arras was at the forefront of major battles during World War I. The First Battle of Arras occurred between October 1 and October 4, 1914. By the end of 1914 armies had been brought to a halt as the opposing forces began to entrench themselves. Battles at Arras would continue throughout the war with major offensive action by the Allies during April and May 1917. The Battle of Vimy Ridge between April 9th and April 12th became famous for the success of Canadian forces taking the Ridge.During the war, Arras suffered severe damage from bombardment.
