WWI Casualties of Yarmouth Town and County
(
April 29)
During the month of April Wartime Heritage has revised the list of men and
women connected to Yarmouth Town and County who lost their lives during
World War I (1914 -1918), or their post war death was attributed to
wartime service. We have researched and created 14 new Remembrance
pages and have added the names to our list of 26 names who died after
August 31, 1921.
“Death was attributed to wartime service” is officially recognized by
Veteran Affairs Canada; however, death certificates may also indicate war
service as a contributing factor. This was the case of the death certificate
of
Milby Murray Spates
, and we included his name on our list.
During our extensive research we identified a number of Veterans who died
of tuberculous and/or heart issues after discharge and who had suffered
from influenza, pneumonia, and related issues during service. Veteran
Affairs do not recognize them. Such is the case of
Percy Fenton
, who died
of tuberculous and who was hospitalized for influenza during service.
With a list of some 1738 individuals who served there are likely many who
died post war from illness related to service.
We coordinated with John Grattan who is undertaking a review of Veteran
graves in Yarmouth County, and we have shared information with each
other resulting from our research and his identification of veteran graves.
