Calvin Valpey Marshall was the son of John W. Marshall (1849-1917) and Bertha Moulton (Prosser) Marshall
(1856-1932), the brother of James Leighton Marshall (1879-1953), Rena Estelle Marshall (1889-1959), and
Ernest Shaw Marshall (1892-1917), and the husband of Helen Barbara (Graham) Marshall (1895-1983).
Calvin’s brother Ernest Shaw Marshall served with the 2nd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force and died
May 3, 1917.
Calvin married Helen Barbara Graham (1895-1983) on August 10, 1920, at the bride’s home in Carleton,
Yarmouth Co., NS, and the two had two children, John Graham Marshall (1923-2011), and Claire A Marshall
(1932-2013). Calvin’s son John served in the US Army during the Second World War.
Calvin enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) in January 1918, before it was restructured as the Royal Air
Force (RAF) on April 1 of that year. He served first in the RFC, the air arm of the British Army, and later in
the RAF after it merged with the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) to form an independent air force.
After Calvin’s military discharge in January 1919, and around the time of Calvin and Helen’s marriage in
August 1920, the couple moved to the United States. Calvin worked as a painter or painting contractor
throughout his life.
Calvin completed his declaration of intention to become a US citizen on January 26, 1925, indicated that he
had immigrated to the US in 1919. He became a US citizen September 12, 1927.
By 1934, Calvin and Helen were residing in Milton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. They were still in Milton in
1942 when Calvin completed his WWII Draft Registration on April 26, listing their address as 103 Decker
Street.
Calvin died in Boston, Suffolk Co., Mass. on April 27, 1959. His place of burial is not known.
