Ansel Hamilton Nichols was the son of Thomas P. Nichols (1857-1928) and Annie Agusta (Prime) Nichols) of
Brazil Lake, Yarmouth Co., NS.
Ansel enlisted with the 219th Battalion at Yarmouth, NS. He embarked Halifax on the SS Olympic on October
12, 1916 and disembarked in Liverpool, England on October 18, 1916. He was transferred to the 85th
Battalion on June 16, 1917, for service in France. He joined the unit in the field on July 7, 1917.
On March 3, 1918, he transferred to the 4th Battalion, Canadian Machine Gun Corps. During his service he
was hospitalized on a number of occasions, suffering from service related illness that included mumps and
trench mouth.
He returned to Canada on February 20, 1919, and was posted to the Casualty Company in Halifax. He was
discharged on March 24, 1919.
Private Nichols died of tuberculosis at Carleton, Yarmouth Co., NS. His
death was attributed to his war service and from the first symptoms
bronchitis due to exposure in a gas attack during service. First
symptoms of tuberculosis was in March 2, 1919 probably when
returning home from overseas (Death Certificate).
