Arthur Stevens 931174 Private No. 2 Construction Battalion April 21, 1895 (based on 1901 census) April 21, 1897 (on attestation papers) Yarmouth, Nova Scotia August 8, 1916 Yarmouth, NS Yarmouth, NS 19/21 5 feet, 6 inches Black Black Black Seaman Single Church of England Nathan Stevens (Father) Greenville, Yarmouth Co., NS February 28, 1919 (Halifax, NS) June 11, 1942 45/47 Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery, Saint John, New Brunswick Arthur Stevens was the son of Nathan (Nathaniel) Stevens (1857-1923) and Phoebe (Jones) Stevens 1868-1911) of Greenville, Yarmouth, County, Nova Scotia. His father was born in Birchtown, Shelburne Co., NS, and his mother was born in Greenville. His parents were married in Greenville on April 1, 1886. The 1901 census records Arthur’s birth date as April 23, 1895. He provided his date of birth as April 21, 1897, on enlistment. His obituary records his year of birth as 1896, and his headstone records his date of birth as 1898. Two of his brothers, John William Stevens and Leslie Hiram Stevens also served in the No. 2 Construction Battalion. Having trained in Canada, Arthur embarked for overseas, on the SS Southland at Halifax on March 25, 1917, arriving in Liverpool, England on April 7, 1917. He embarked England for service in France arriving there on May 17, 1917. He returned to England on December 14, 1918. Returning to Canada, having served in Canada, England, and France, he was discharged on February 28, 1919. Arthur died of bronchial pneumonia at the Saint John General Hospital in Saint John, New Brunswick after a lengthy illness. He had lived in Saint John for 7-10 years prior to his death. He was interred 2 days after his death on June 13, 1942, at the Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery in Saint John, New Brunswick. His death was reported in the Telegraph-Journal on June 11, 1942: Arthur R. Stevens Dies in Hospital The death of Arthur R. Stevens occurred June 11 al the Saint John General Hospital. Arthur was born in Yarmouth, N.S., but had resided in Saint John for the past ten years. A veteran of the last war, Mr. Stevens Was 46 years old, and his death followed A lengthy illness. He leaves to mourn two sisters, Mrs. Porter, Arthena Stevens, both of Yarmouth, and several nieces and nephews. The late Mr. Stevens served in France and England during the last war with No. 2 Construction [Battalion].
