Donald “Dyke” McLeod Vince Gayton was the son of Ebenezer Crowell Smith Gayton (1852–1932) and Letitia
Adelaide Henderson Gayton (1861–1941). Donald’s father was born in Argyle, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia. His
mother was born in Brighton, New Brunswick.
He was the brother of Carol Genevieve (Gayton) Kelsey (1884–1982), Claude Victor Gayton (1886–1937), Martha
Abigail Gayton (1890–1892), and John Avard Gayton (1893–1968). Claude served with the US Army Air Service in
WWI as a pilot and flying instructor. John also served with the United States Army Air Service during WWI.
Donald Gayton was living in Gowanda, New York when he enlisted in
December 1917. He served with the 1st Light Infantry, US Army. He
was promoted to Captain on September 11, 1918 and served at Fort
Niagara, New York. He also served with the 302nd Field Signal
Battalion and with the 152nd Depot Brigade at Camp Upton, New York.
He was discharged on August 14, 1919.
Donald Gayton also served during WWII (0510569) as 1st Lieutenant in
the United States Army, from January 19, 1943 to June 13, 1944.
