Jacob ‘Jake’ Benedict Babin Jr. was the son of Jacob Benedict Babin (1924-2002) and Frances Blanche
(Burke) Babin (1923-2006).
Jacob’s father was born in Glenwood, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia. His mother was born in Everett,
Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
Jacob Benedict Babin’s tour in Vietnam began on February 6, 1970.
He was killed by small arms fire (hostile; ground casualty) in South Vietnam on March 26, 1971. It occurred
during an ambush by North Vietnamese Army (NVA) regulars during combat operations, north of Hue, near
Dong Ha, Quảng Trị. Military Police were conducting convoy escorts from Vietnam, into Cambodia and Laos -
along the DMZ border of North Vietnam.
Jake had voluntarily extended his combat tour of duty past the required one year, and was killed in action,
according to his family, with only 11 days left to go in his last tour.
His body was recovered from Vietnam and his remains were repatriated to the US. He is interred at the
Forest Dale Cemetery in Malden, Mass, US. He is remembered on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, at the
National Mall in Washington, DC.
Camp Babin in Phu Bai Vietnam was named in his honor.
