Flight Sergeant Macaulay was the son of Alexander
Forrester and Florence Elizabeth MacAulay of Pugwash, NS.
He completed his schooling in 1929 and after the death of
his father in 1930 he managed his mother’s store and farm
  until his enlistment.
Following initial training in Canada he embarked for
England. On the morning of July 27, 1942, while serving
with 405 Squadron of Bomber Command, Sergeant Macaulay
was the Wireless Operator and Air Gunner on an aircraft
detailed to carry out air operations against Hamburg,
Germany. The aircraft (Halifax W.1186) crashed at 1:45 am
near the mouth of the Este, a small river running into the
  Elbe between Crans and Neuenfelds.
Two bodies were recovered at the crash site, one being
that of Sergeant Macaulay. On July 29, a salvage party
removed the remains of the aircraft from the river.
