Commemorated on Page 91 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance Displayed in the Memorial Chamber of the Peace Tower in Ottawa on February 27 Flight Sergeant Macaulay was the son of Alexander Forrester and Florence Elizabeth MacAulay of Pugwash, NS. He completed his schooling in 1929 and after the death of his father in 1930 he managed his mother’s store and farm until his enlistment. Following initial training in Canada he embarked for England. On the morning of July 27, 1942, while serving with 405 Squadron of Bomber Command, Sergeant Macaulay was the Wireless Operator and Air Gunner on an aircraft detailed to carry out air operations against Hamburg, Germany. The aircraft (Halifax W.1186) crashed at 1:45 am near the mouth of the Este, a small river running into the Elbe between Crans and Neuenfelds. Two bodies were recovered at the crash site, one being that of Sergeant Macaulay. On July 29, a salvage party removed the remains of the aircraft from the river.
