Commemorated on Page 101 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance Displayed in the Memorial Chamber of the Peace Tower in Ottawa on March 4 Pilot Officer, James Doran Mullins was the son of Walter Doran Mullins and Cora Addington (Crawford) Mullins and sister of Irene Mullins of Halifax, Nova Scotia. He attended school at Sir Charles Tupper ( 1927 - 1935) and Bloomfield High School completing his studies in 1937. On completing school he worked as a plumber’s helper until he joined the RCAF. He completed his initial Training at Toronto, his Elementary Training at London, Ontario and his Service Flying Training at Brantford, Ontario in Canada and received his Pilot’s Flying Badge (Wings) on September 1, 1941. Pilot Officer Mullins went overseas to England in September 1941. He served with 20 Operational Training Unit until May 6, 1942 and was then assigned to 9 RAF Squadron. While serving with 20 OTU, he was involved in the air crash during a training flight of a Wellington with the loss of five crew members. Acting as Second pilot, he survived the accident as did the Front Air Gunner. Both were slightly injured and Pilot Officer Mullins was hospitalized for four days. The aircraft, Wellington R1760, crashed into the sea at Cruden Bay, Peterhead, Scotland on April 1, 1942 . Four the of the six man crew were lost. The cause of the crash was due to the loss of the port air-screw, the result of oil starvation. On the night of July 28/29, 1942, Pilot Officer Mullins was a crew member on Wellington III (X3475) serving with 9 RAF Squadron, flying from HMS Honington on air operations over Hamburg, Germany. The plane crashed at Neugraben, a district of Hamburg and all crew were lost. Pilot Officer Mullins was buried in the Becklingen War Cemetery.
