Commemorated on page 372 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance Displayed in the Memorial Chamber of the Peace Tower in Ottawa on August 7 Flying Officer Ralph Nelson MacDonald was the son of John Nelson MacDonald and Ethel MacDonald, of Glace Bay, NS. Prior to his enlistment he was employed with the Canadian Bank of Commerce at Glace Bay, NS. Having trained in Canada he went overseas in October 1943. While serving with 439 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force, Flying Officer MacDonald was killed on November 3, 1944 when the Typhoon aircraft that he was piloting crashed during a non- operational day flight over Eindhoven, Holland.
