Sidney’s siblings were Ernest Edmond McCullough (1915-1995), Charles Cornelius McCullough (1916- 1932), Roy William McCullough (1918-1947), Edwina Elizabeth McCullough (1921-2004), Russell Arthur McCullough (1925-1989), Cereno McCullough (1928-1990), and Richard Roger McCullough (1932-1972). His brother Roy also served in the military during the Second World War, as a Gunner in the Artillery in France, and his brother Russell served in the RCAF. Prior to enlistment, Sidney was employed as a farm labourer in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia, for local farmer Arthur Marshall. He also indicated that after the war he would like to work at sea. After enlistment in the Canadian Army, Sidney trained at Petawawa, Ontario, starting in early June 1941. He was granted embarkation leave in early September 1941 before departing Halifax for the United Kingdom on September 18. He disembarked at Gourock, Scotland, on October 3, 1941. Gunner McCullough departed the UK at the end of October 1944, disembarking in the Mediterranean theatre of war on November 8, 1944. He was killed in action in a minefield near his camp in Italy. Interred at the Minturo War Cemetery in Italy, Sidney is also memorialised on a family headstone at the Sandy Cove Baptist Cemetery in Digby Co.
