John Smith Blaikie was the son of Andrew Cecil Blaikie (1891-1959) and Elizabeth Blaikie, of Economy,
Colchester Co., Nova Scotia. John had a brother, Bradford Cecil Blaikie (1923-2014), who also served
overseas in WWII.
His mother was born in Manchester, England. His father was born in Great Village Colchester Co., NS, and
served Canada in the First World War (Service Number 90265), enlisted with the 29th Battery in
Fredericton, NB and serving with the 6th Battalion of the Canadian Field Artillery in Europe with the
Canadian Expeditionary Forces.
John enjoyed tennis, swimming, moderate skating, middle distance running, boxing and hockey
(occasionally). In addition to English, he spoke German and French. He attended Great Village High School
and graduation Grade 12 in June 1939. He earned high rank with the Scouts.
He was serving as a pilot with the Middle East Pool of the RCAF, and killed when his aircraft, a Hurricane
(#P3725), crashed while attempting to land during Hurricane training at Wadi Natrun. He had made several
attempts to land and was very low on fuel.
