At 5 PM, while sailing with convoy SH-194 from Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, to Halifax, the ship was hit by a torpedo launched from U-1232 4 miles (6.5 km) off Halifax, position 44°30'N / 63°00'W. The ship’s bow was blown off, but the ship remained afloat. The wreck was towed to Pictou, Nova Scotia, and repaired.John was one of two sailors who were killed. The second was Able Seaman Joseph Hercule Ulric Bazinet, age 22, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Phidime Bazinet, of Cornwall, Ontario.The date of death of John Thomas Carroll was incorrectly recorded as January 1, 1945, with the Veterans Affairs’ Canadian Virtual War Memorial and the Books of Remembrance in Ottawa. This error was reported by the Wartime Heritage Association to have it corrected.
