Herbert Harris was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Harris, of Scatarie Island, NS. Scatarie Island is
located off the coast of Baleine, Cape Breton Island.
The DS Nyland departed Methil for Oban, Scotland in Convoy EN 35 on December 2, 1940 , in order to
join Convoy OB 255, which originated in Liverpool on December 7. but never reached her destinations.
Bad weather was encountered and many ships sought refuge. An S.O.S. was received saying that the ship
had run aground on West Rock, Isle of Iona, Scotland on December 6, 1940 and was about to break up. A
tug was sent out to assist, but no trace of the ship or her twenty crew members was found.
Wreckage of the ship was found at Torran Rocks, Scotland.
The Canadian Virtual War Memorial records the date of death as January 1, 1941 and the Ship as SS
Nyland (Sweden); however, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records the date of death as
December 6, 1940 and the ship as the SS Nyland (Norway).
William McDougall, Mess Room Boy, was also lost on the SS Nyland (Norway) on December 6, 1940.
