Return To Links
SS Mildred Pauline The SS Mildred Pauline was a 300-ton, three-masted schooner built in 1919 in Placentia, Newfoundland. Originally named the SS Herbert Fearn and later the SS Jean F. McCrea, it was eventually acquired by R.W. Sainthill & Co. of North Sydney, Cape Breton. During the Second World War, the vessel operated out of its home port in Sydney, Nova Scotia. On April 23, 1942, the ship departed Barbados carrying a cargo of sugar cane molasses destined for St. John’s, Newfoundland. On May 8, while sailing unescorted and unarmed under the command of Master Abram George Thornhill, the Mildred Pauline (Official Number 142073) was intercepted by the German Type VIIC submarine U-136 approximately 425 miles south-east of Nova Scotia. The engagement began at 00:20 hours when the submarine fired a torpedo that missed the vessel. Approximately one hour later, at 01:33 hours, U-136 surfaced and attacked the schooner with its deck gun. The Mildred Pauline was shelled with 102 rounds and subsequently sank. The attack resulted in the loss of all hands, including Captain Abraham ‘Abe’ George Thornhill and his six-man crew, in the North Atlantic.
