Frederick Blackburn Ordinary Seaman SS Fort Columbia (Montreal) Canadian Merchant Navy 1927 Halifax, Nova Scotia 13 Morris St., Halifax, Nova Scotia Roman Catholic January 1, 1947 20 Santos, Brazil At sea. Commemorated on Page 96 of the Merchant Navy Book of Remembrance Displayed in the Memorial Chamber of the Peace Tower in Ottawa on February 28, February 29, and July 28 Frederick Blackburn was the son of Michael Patrick Blackburn (1896-1982) and Mary Teresa McDonald (1896-1977) of Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was the brother of Francis Joseph Blackburn (1916-1995), Robert Emmett Blackburn (1921-2009), and Kenneth Edward Blackburn (1924-1999). He was predeceased by a brother John Patrick Blackburn (1919-1920), a brother Thomas Anthony Blackburn (1920-1920 and a sister Mary Geraldine Blackbrun (1920-1920). Frederick joined the Merchant Navy at the age of 17 in 1944. He arrived in New York on March 16, 1944. He was serving on the SS Fort Columbia at the time of his death the SS Fort Columbia was in Santos, Brazil. Frederick died on board the ship the result of an accident. His name is commemorated on the family monument in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, Halifax Co., Nova Scotia. The official record of Merchant Seaman Death records his death as January 1, 1947; however, the family monument lists 1946 as the year of death. Ordinary Seaman Frederick Blackburn was buried at sea with full military honours.
