Joseph served with the 1st Halifax Coast Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery (RCA) under the National Resources Mobilization Act from January 27, 1943, until his enlistment in the active force in June of 1944 when he attested for general service in Halifax. He departed Canada for the UK in November of 1944, and transferred from England to North Western Europe on January 23, 1945, and died April 9, 1945, during the Liberation of the Netherlands, just prior to the Battle of Groningen mid-April 1945. He was initially buried in Holland near a church in Haarle in the Netherlands and was later reinterred at the Holten Canadian War Cemetery, Netherlands.
