Commemorated on Page 419 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance Displayed in the Memorial Chamber of the Peace Tower in Ottawa on September 6 Edward Postlethwaite was the son of James Postlethwaite (1882-1971) and Maria (Thompson) Postlethwaite (1885-1945). He was the husband of Mary Frances (Drover) Postlethwaite and the father of Bernard Edward Postlethwaite, Jean Elizabeth Postlethwaite, and Isabell Diane Postlethwaite. Prior to his enlistment, Edward was employed with the pipefitters at the blast furnace of the Dominion Iron and Steel Company, Sydney, Nova Scotia. Edward completed basic training and advanced training in Canada. He departed Canada on February 28, 1942 and arrived in the United Kingdom on March 3, 1942. On October 24 he embarked England for the Mediterranean (Italian Campaign) and disembarked on November 10, 1943, in Italy as part of the 11th Infantry Brigade, 5th Canadian Armoured Division. A major Canadian offensive to cross the Lamone River began on the night of December 10, 1944, involving both the 1st and 5th Canadian Divisions. The initial advance was swift, but German forces regrouped and counterattacked on December 11th and 12th. On December 13th the fighting was intense, particularly around the Canale Naviglio. Private Postlethwaite was killed in action on December 13, 1944. He is buried in the Villanova Canadian War Cemetery, Italy.
