Douglas Patrick Connors was the son of William Lawrence Connors of Halifax, NS. His mother
predeceased him in 1929. He had two brothers, two half brother, and one half sister. His brother
Lawrence, and his half brother E. A. Connors, also served during WWII going overseas with the 1st
Division.
Douglas left school at the age of 15, completing Grade 7, and worked as a grocery clerk prior to his
enlistment at the age of 17. He also served fifteen month with the 2nd Reserve Battalion of the Halifax
Rifles prior to his enlistment. He played baseball, softball, tennis, and soccer. He read detective stories,
western stories, and newspapers and he attended movies, sport events, and dances. At enlistment he
was assessed as being “an upright, confident clean cut youth” and appeared to have “leadership
qualities and is considered possible NCO material”.
Following enlistment, Private Connors completed Basic Training at #60 CABTC Yarmouth, NS between
October 8, 1943 and December 6, 1943. He completed Advanced Training at Aldershot, NS. On April 8,
1944, he transferred to #1 Training Brigade Group at Debert, NS as he was not eligible for overseas duty
until September 16, 1944 when he was 19 years of age.
Private Connors served with the 48th Highlanders of
Canada in Italy, He was killed in action on January 13,
1945. He was initially buried in the Ramone River
Cemetery, near he village of Villanova. He was re-interned
in the Ravenna War Cemetery, Italy in August, 1945.
