Nathan Feinstein was the son of Isidor (1892-1937) and Fannie (Wener) Feinstein (b. 1892) of Toronto, ON.
His parents were married in Sydney, NS, June 13, 1916. Nathan had three brothers - Sam, Joseph (Johnnie)
and Bernard; and two sisters – Edith and Rachel.
His brother Flight Sergeant Samuel Feinstein, died September 30, 1942, in the RCAF, serving with 12 RAF
Squadron on operational duty over Germany.
After their father’s death in 1937, and before WWII, the eldest son Nathan looked after the business and
family affairs; he was the manager of their Ladies’ and Gents’ Dry Goods Store in Inverness.
Nathan originally enlisted with the NPAM (Non-Permanent Active Militia) in the Coast Royal Canadian
Artillery in May 1942. He was taken on strength with the No. 1 Transit Camp May 1, 1942, and interviewed
May 3, 1942. He was at Aldershot for Basic Training in the Reserves from May 15 to 18, 1942, and Advanced
Training at Aldershot from May 19 to June 9, 1942. He was at No. 61 CABTC in New Glasgow, NS, from May
16-18, 1942, and at #A14 Advanced training in Aldershot, NS from May 19 to June 9, 1942.
Private Feinstein was reassigned from the Royal Canadian Artillery (104th Coast Battery) to the Canadian
Infantry Corps, re-enlisting for Active Service in WWII, in Shelburne on September 16, 1942.
He departed Canada August 29, and disembarked in the UK September 5, 1944. A month later, he embarked
October 1 in the UK, disembarking the next day in France October 2, 1944.
Private Nathan Feinstein was wounded November 1, with a gun shot wound to the abdomen in the Battle of
the Scheldt, during Operation Switchback, and died of his wounds November 2, 1944, after admission to the
No. 5th Canadian Field Dressing Station (5 FDS).
He is interred at the Adegem Canadian War Cemetery in Belgium.
