Kenneth Rae Forrester was the son of John Rae Forrester (1839-1912) and Caroline Augusta Dinah
(Beale) Forrester (1858-1899) of England, and the brother of Percy Rae Forrester (1882-1968).
Kenneth’s death certificate records his birth year as 1879, the 1921 census and his WWII enlistment
record; as 1881, and his birth record confirms it was 1880.
Kenneth was the husband of Annie Caroline (Gossip) Forrester (1886-1940), and the father of Dorothy
Margery Forrester (1911-1958), of Bear River, Nova Scotia. Annie died in 1940, and Kenneth’s daughter
Dorothy was listed as his next of kin in WWII. His other 3 children were Sergeant Major John Rae
Forrester, CD (1907-1991), Caroline Augusta Forrester (1911-1912), and Margaret (Margret) Forrester
(1915-1987).
Prior to WWII, Major Forrester served for 26 years in the Permanent Force of the Canadian Army from
September 2, 1910 to September 18, 1936. During WWI he served with the Canadian Ordnance Corps
(June 21, 1918 - August 29, 1920). In the 1930’s, Kenneth was a Lieutenant in the Canadian Army. The
family lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Because of his extensive ordnance experience, Kenneth was recalled from retirement on September
15, 1939, and employed with various responsible duties. In 1940, he served as Camp Ordnance Officer
at Camp Borden in Ontario. He served as the DODOS (Deputy Assistant Director of Ordnances Services)
with National Defence Headquarters; however, relinquished this appointment on December 31, 1940,
to assume other wartime responsibilities and duties. Promoted to the rank of Major on January 1, 1941,
he continued to serve with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps.
Major Kenneth Forrester died of lung cancer at
the Camp Hill Military Hospital on February 10,
1942.
Major Forrester is interred at the Mount Hope
Cemetery in Bear River, Annapolis County, Nova
Scotia.
