Carl Melvin Fried was the son of Max Fried (1870-1935) and Rose H. (Hausner) Fried (1882-1953), and
the brother of Mae Fried Baff (1904-1991), Nina Fried Cohen (1907-1991), Jerry Fried (1908-1987),
and Lillian Fried (1910-1911. Carl’s father was born in Austria and his mother was born in the US.
Carl’s birth year is recorded as 1913, 1914 and 1915 on various documents. His mother recorded it as
1915 on the Department of Defence Estates Branch form.
He attended elementary school in Glace Bay, the Newark junior high school, and furthered his
education at the Sydney Academy. He enjoyed baseball, football, hockey, and swimming. While in
school he also worked as an office clerk in his father’s real estate business (census of 1931). His
brother Jerry also worked a real estate agent for their father.
He worked in mining, was working for a rug firm in Montreal when he enlisted, initially with the Black
watch Regiment of Canada. He completed basic training at No. 41 Canadian Infantry Basic Training
Centre (CABTC) in Huntington, Quebec from August 1st to October 1, 1941. Then he transferred to
Advanced Training Centre ATC-12 in Farnham, QC for advanced training.
Carl departed Canada on December 15, 1941, disembarking in the United Kingdom on December 23,
1941.
Stationed in England until the beginning of the North
African Campaign. He served in Africa, and while in
the Mediterranean Theatre, contracted malaria on
more than one occasion and had to be hospitalised.
After being hospitalised in Bari, Italy, and subsequently
being released, he was assigned to the Seaforth
Highlanders.
Private Carl Melvin Fried was killed in fighting on the
Hitler Line on May 23, 1944.
The family chose the inscription, “Darling, your smile
and your loving memory will live in our hearts
forever.”
