Remembering Thomas Charles LeBlanc Second Steward on the MV Inverilen (Glasgow, Scotland) Lost at Sea: February 3, 1943 (Aged 27) Canadian Virtual War Memorial Listed on the Halifax Memorial Commemorated on Page 172 of the Merchant Navy Book of Remembrance. Thomas Charles LeBlanc, born February 21, 1915, was the son of Lazare LeBlanc and Harriet Jane (Aucoin) LeBlanc (1894-1998) of Belle Cote, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Thomas was one of the 47 crew members on the MV Inverilen, on February 3, 1943, when the ship was struck by a torpedo fired from U-boat-456, south of Iceland. The MV Inverilen was in convoy HX-224. The ship had departed New York on January 22, 1943 with a cargo of petroleum products en-route to Stanlow, in the UK. The torpedo struck at 02.57 and the crew abandoned the ship. The master, 24 crew members and six gunners were lost. 14 crew members and two passengers were picked up by HMS Asphodel and landed at Londonderry.
