James Richard Patterson was the son of Walter William Patterson (1890-1976) and Mae Laura
(Middleton) Patterson (1897-1966), of Sussex, New Brunswick. He was the brother of Guy Edward, Roy
Middleton, Lloyd George, Earl, Lawrence Walter, Murray William, and Laura Lucilla. Roy Middleton
Patterson (1920-2002) and Lloyd George Patterson (1922-1988) also served in the Canadian Army during
WWII. While born in Nova Scotia, James lived from the age of three weeks in New Brunswick.
James completed basic training under the Militia Act, (National Resources Mobilization Act) between
October 9, 1940 and November 7, 1940 at No. 70 Canadian Army (Basic) Training Centre, Fredericton,
New Brunswick with the 1st Mortars, 2nd Battalion, New Brunswick Rangers (Service Number
G/428118).
He transferred to the 1st Battalion, Royal Rifles of Canada on November 12, 1940, and served in,
Sussex, New Brunswick, in Newfoundland with Force W, and in Quebec. Hew embarked Canada on
October 27, 1941 and disembarked in Hong Kong on November 16, 1940 for service in defence of Hong
Kong with Force C.
With the fall of Hong Kong to the Japanese on
December 25, 1941, Rifleman Patterson became
a prisoner of war. He was first imprisoned at
Camp Stanley, Fort Stanley, until December 30,
1941. He was transferred to Camp North Point,
until September 26, 1942 and to Camp
Shamshuipo, at Kowloon, Hong Kong.
He died of acute enteritis (inflammation of the
small intestine) on October 23, 1942.
