  Gervase Benedict Rendell was the son of Jeremiah Rendell (1873-1948), and of Mary Elizabeth ‘Bessie’ 
  (Gallant) Rendell (1886-1969, of Florence, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and the brother of Cordelia May 
  (Rendell) Brogan (b. 1909), Agnes C. (Rendell) O’Neil (b. 1918), and Mark Jeremiah Rendell (1923-
  1968).
  After enlisting in April, Gervase began basic training on May 21, 1942, at the No. 61 Canadian Infantry 
  Basic Training Centre (CABTC 61) in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, until July 17, 1942. Upon completion of 
  training and embarkation leave before his departure, he boarded a ship on August 22, 1942, in Halifax, 
  NS, disembarking in the United Kingdom on August 31st.
  He later embarked in the UK on June 13, 1943, disembarked in the Mediterranean Theatre July 10, 
  1943. July 10, 1943, marked the 1st day of Operation Husky, the Allied landing at Sicily.
  Private Gervase suffered a gun shot wound in his upper left thigh July 25, 1943, in combat in Sicily. He 
  was evacuated to the hospital ship HMHS Aba in the Mediterranean and died of the wounds received in 
  action 4 days later July 29th. 
  The record indicates he was buried at sea on July 30, 1943, at a position 32.55 N., 13.24 E. in the 
  Mediterranean. 
  Gervase Rendell is remembered on the Cassino War Memorial in Italy.
