John Batiste Richard was the son of Frank Anicet (or Anissette) Richard (b. 1898) and Elizabeth ‘Lézé or
Lizzie’ May (Boucher) Richard (b. circa 1902) of Rogersville, New Brunswick, and the brother of Joseph
Pierre Richard (b. 1924) and Joseph Guillaume ‘Willie’ Richard (b. circa 1931).
His father also served in the Canadian Army in New Brunswick during the Second World War.
John completed basic training at the No. 62 Canadian Infantry Basic Training Centre (CIBTC) from August 1 to
September 30, 1941, and advanced training at No. 14 Canadian Infantry Training Centre at Aldershot in Kings
Co., NS.
He departed Canada Feb 28, 1942, disembarking in the United Kingdom on March 9, 1942. He landed in
Sicily, Italy on August 27, 1943, and was hospitalized before joining the West Nova Scotia Regiment on
September 28, 1943.
Private John Batiste was killed in action in Italy on December 14,
1943. He was initially interred in Lanciano near San Leonardo and
reinterred at the Moro River Canadian War Cemetery in San Donato,
in the Commune of Ortona, Italy.
