Displayed in the Memorial Chamber of the Peace Tower in Ottawa on May 10th Louis Phillip Theriault was the son of James William Theriault (1887-1960) and Mary Laura (LeBlanc) Theriault (1889-1956)of Digby, NS. He was brother of Mary Florence, Margaret (Peggy) Eugina, and Ester. He completed his grade 11 at the age of 17 and was then employed by Wagner Tours in Digby until his enlistment in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His sport interests included softball, baseball and played on the Junior hockey team for Digby. He also built model planes as a hobby and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Louis completed basic training in Course #1 No 60 CIBTC in Yarmouth between October 10, 1940 and November 8, 1940. He enlisted with the RCAF on September 17, 1941 and trained in Canada, receiving his Pilot’s Flying Badge on August 29, 1942. He went overseas arriving in the United Kingdom on November 30, 1942. He was assigned to No 41 Operational Training Unit on December 22, 1942, and to 414 Squadron, RCAF, on April 7, 1943. On August 21, 1943, Louis participated in Operation Rhubarb flying a Mustang I (AM160) from RAF Ashford, in Kent. The Squadron was flying defensive operations over the English Channel and on August 21st Flying Officer Theriault was on an operation over Paris, France, during the late afternoon when he attacked and shot down a Ju88. His aircraft hit an obstruction and crashed. He was initially listed as missing and presumed killed in action when he failed to return to the airfield at Ashford. He was buried in the Reau Communal Cemetery, Seine-et-Marne, France.
