Albert Archibald Barter was born on December 14, 1922, in Inverness, Nova Scotia, the son of John Albert Barter (1898-1972) and Florence Ann Beaton (1899-1995). He was the brother of Madeleine Catherine Barter (1923-1999) and Rita Joan Barter (1925-1995). Albert was serving as a Mess Room Boy on the Norwegian ship, MV Velma. On October 14, 1944 while in Barry Wales, Albert was killed in a car accident. He was buried in the Merthyr Dyfan Burial Grounds Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. At the time of his death the family was living in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His registered address on the Record of Death of Merchant Seaman was 24 Hennessey Place, Halifax, NS. His rating on the ship is recorded as Cabin Boy.
