Lawrence Fairn Chipman was the son of Frederick Atwood
Chipman (1873-1932) and Julietta ‘Julia’ Pearl (Fairn) Chipman,
later Turner (1896-1953) of Kentville, the brother of George
Frederick Chipman (1920-2001), the husband of Marjorie Bertha
(Boland) Chipman; later Jones (1920-2006), and the father of
Frederick L. Chipman (1944-2019).
Lawrence also had a half-sister, Annie Fredericka Chipman
(1908-1975), who married Chester Greenough Robinson (b.
1909), in 1940. She was Lawrence’s sister from his father's first
marriage to Eva Maude Miller Parker (1878–1913), whom his
father wed in 1905. Eva died in 1913.
Lawrence’s mother was born in Albany, Annapolis Co., and his
father was born in Nictaux, also in Annapolis Co. Lawrence’s
wife Marjorie was born in Malden, Massachusetts. Lawrence’s
father died in 1932, and his mother remarried, Archibald
Douglas Turner in 1940.
Lawrence’s brother George Frederick Chipman served in the
Royal Canadian Air Force with RAF Ferry Command. George
later worked for Air Canada, TCA’s successor) for 33 years and rose to Chief Navigating Officer. During his
career in aviation, he set a number of world flight time records, and on several occasions was honoured to
serve on the flight crew for the Royal Family when they visited Canada.
Lawrence initially enlisted as a Victualling Probationer (Temp) in January 1940. His postings, promotions and
transfers during the Second World War were as follows:
Special Service Division, RCNVR - Enlisted June 28, 1940, and commenced Active Service June 28, 1940, as
a Probationary Victualling Assistant, RCNVR, an entry-level rank with the naval supply branch.

Lawrence was appointed Lieutenant (S), a Lieutenant in the Supply
Branch of the Royal Canadian Navy, on March 12, 1945. He was
discharged from the Navy on May 8, 1945, for being medically unfit
for continued service.
Lieutenant Lawrence Fairn Chipman died from complications after
surgery in Montreal. Quebec. His death was attributed to his
military served. He is buried in the United Baptist Cemetery,
Nictaux, Nova Scotia.
