Both of Julian’s parents were born in Nova Scotia and died in Wasco County, Oregon. His father was born in New France, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, and his mother was born in Tracadie, also in Antigonish Co. He was the husband of Frances Madeline (Finn) McNeil (1897-1940), and father of Michael E. McNeil, Robert McNeil, and Marie McNeil. Julian’s siblings were John A. McNeil (1876-1924), Joseph Roderick McNeil (1879-1937), James Walker McNeil (1881-d. by 1902), Mary Christine ‘Tina’ (McNeil) Allan (1884-1904), Jerome Delore McNeil (1886-1947), Emma Theresa (McNeil) Moore (1887-1956), Julius Grant Anthony McNeil (1889-1970), Clara Josephine (McNeil) Lassiter (1894-1965), Julian Eugene McNeil (1896-1943), and Frances Loretta ‘Retta’ (McNeil) Meyers (1898- 1960). After enlisting in October 1942, Julian served with the 387th Base Headquarters and Air Base Squadron at the Hobbs Army Air Field in Hobbs, New Mexico. The 387th was the administrative unit responsible for Hobbs Army Airfield and oversaw base operations, personnel, and support services for the B17 transition training program conducted there. The squadron coordinated with multiple flying training squadrons (953rd–958th Two Engine Flying Training Squadrons) that operated at Hobbs. Private Julian Eugene McNeil died of a medical condition at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas at 03:40 hrs. on April 14, 1943. He was interred 3 days later on April 17, 1943, at the Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso, Texas. He was in active service at the time of his death.
