Stanley Arthur Ward was the son of Private Arthur Joseph Ward (1889-1958) and Helen Alice (Mills) Ward
(1892-1979), and the brother of Ida Mary (Ward) McCarthy (1918-2003). His father was born in Victoria, BC,
and his mother was born in Leicester, England.
From 1940-1942, he served with the Seaforth Highlanders before
enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Prior to his RCAF enlistment,
he was employed as a clerk from 1932-1942 at the Kelly Douglas & Co.
Ltd in Vancouver. He had studied at Henry Hudson and Kitsilano High
Schools.
He completed an enlistment form November 1, 1941, at the No. 3
Manning Depot, Edmonton, Alberta, and another on April 28, 1942, at
the No.1 RCAF Recruiting Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia. His
assessment noted that he was sincere and alert, very keen to fly,
[would be] good aircrew.
He trained at the No. 3 Service Flying Training School (3 SFTS) in
Calgary, Alberta, beginning June 15, 1942, the No. 3 Wireless School (3
WS) in Winnipeg, Manitoba, beginning July 5, 1942, and the No. 2
Bombing and Gunnery School in Mossbank, Saskatchewan, beginning
January 22, 1943. On March 5, 1943, he was assigned to the No. 32
Operation Training Unit, RAF (32 OTU) in Patricia Bay, British Columbia.
He then joined 160 (BR) Squadron at RCAF Station Yarmouth in
Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, in June of 1943.
That same year in November, Flight Sergeant Stanley Arthur Ward
became ill, was transferred to the Camp Hill Military Hospital on
November 16, 1943, and died 2 days before his 27th birthday, on
November 23, 1943, of Tuberculous Meningitis.
