Herbert Russell Davies was the son of Herbert Davies (1890–1967) and Ellen May (Wallbank) Davies (1893–1968) of Toronto
Ontario. He was the brother of Mary Alice (b. 1915), Edithe (b.1919), and Helena Dories (b.1921).
His hobby was model aircraft building and he enjoyed baseball and skating. In the year prior to his enlistment he was employed
as a driver salesman. He also served in 1942 with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and enlisted with the RCAF in
December of that year.
Sergeant Davies trained in Canada until November 1, 1943. He received his Air Gunner Badge on October 15, 1943. He embarked
Halifax on December 1 and disembarked in the United Kingdom on November 9, 1943. In England he served with 82 Operational
Training Unit and was assigned to 1659 Heavy Conversion Unit on April 17, 1944. On May 2, 1944 Sergeant Davies was the Air
Gunner on Halifax II BB247 on a training operation from RAF Topcliffe, North Yorkshire, that crashed at take-off when the aircraft
stalled and dived into the ground near the airfield. All six members of the crew were killed.
Sergeant Davies is buried in the Harrogate (Stornefall) Cemetery, England.
