Lot 8. Block 10. Grave 186.
On October 30, 1944, while training at #5 Bombing and Gunnery School at Dafoe, Saskatchewan, Lars Cyril
Jansonn was a trainee air gunner on Anson I 6389 that crashed in fog near the air base. All four of the crew,
(the pilot and three trainees) were killed.
Five Anson aircraft took off between 7:30 pm and approximately 8 pm. Four were going on bombing
exercises and one was on a familiarization flight. Fog was expected to appear about 10 pm, however, at 7
pm visibility was good and the ceiling unlimited and it was expected that all five aircraft would be safely
back before the fog would prevent safe landing.
The first aircraft returned at 9:00 pm and the pilot reported ground fog. The remaining four aircraft were
recalled by radio, but only three of the four responded to the call. The radio aboard Anson 6389 had
malfunctioned. His broadcasts could be heard, but it appeared he was not receiving any broadcasts from
either the control tower or any other aircraft.
Anson 6389 descended into the fog and crashed some 200 yards off the western boundary of the aerodrome.
A second Anson (6524) crashed into some trees just outside the aerodrome’s western boundary. The two
other Ansons in the air were diverted to the base at Regina and landed safely.
