Following training in Canada Sergeant MacKimmie went overseas, arriving in the United Kingdom, on April 7, 1944. He was assigned
to No. 22 Operational Training Unit, RAF Wellesbourne, Warwickshire, on May 16, 1944.
On June 29, 1944 Wellington III HF 641 with a crew of six, including Sergeant MacKimmie serving as air gunner, departed RAF
Wellesbourne on a non-operational day solo cross country flight. At 5:20 pm the aircraft, struck by lightning, crashed at Roade,
Northamptonshire. All members of the crew were killed.
Sergeant MacKimmie was buried on July 4, 1944 in the Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey, United Kingdom
