John Duncan Morrison was the son of George Gillespie Morrison (b. 1894) and Janet ‘Jennie’ (Elder) Morrison, of Balcarres,
Saskatchewan, and the brother of two sisters, Mrs. Lorna Fay (Morrison) Jeffrey and Mrs. Margaret ‘Peggy’ (Morrison) Stanutz.
His father served with the Princess Patricias from 1915-1919 in WWI, and as Company Sergeant Major with the Regina Rifles (Service
No. L/27302) in Canadian Army Overseas from 1940-1945 in WWII. His sister, Margaret, then Mrs. Margaret Stanutz, served with the
Canadian Woman’s Army Corps (CWAC) at Camp Shilo in Manitoba.
John played hockey, baseball, and basketball. He completed grades 1-4 from 1932-1936 at the Pell Public School, grades 5-8 from
1937-1940 at the Prince Albert King George School, and grades 9 and 10 from 1940-42 at the Balcarres High School. In 1942-43, he
worked on James Elder’s farm in Balcarres (likely a relative of his mother), caring for livestock and the other farm duties.
After enlisting in April of 1943, and completing his training in Canada, John embarked on March 5th in Halifax and arrived in the UK
on March 14, 1944. John then Joined the No. 20 Operational Training Unit (20 OTU) on April 11, 1944, and transferred to No. 41 Base
on July 21, 1944.
During his service with the No. 1652 Heavy Conversion Unit (1652 HCU) at Marston Moor in Yorkshire, England, Flight Sergeant John
Duncan Morrison was killed in an aviation incident. The Halifax aircraft DG 226, in which he was a crew member, crashed at the
Wetherby Golf Course in Yorkshire. The tragic event occurred during a routine training flight that took off at 2:20 pm. At an altitude
of 1000 feet, a fire erupted in the port outer engine, and despite efforts to extinguish it while flying over Wetherby, the crew was
unsuccessful, leading to the crash and the loss of all crew members.
