Donald Andrew Harvey Redshaw was the son of Andrew Redshaw and Sadie Sarah (Crow) Redshaw, and the sister of Violet Eunice
(Redshaw) Owen. His father was born in Scotland, his mother, in England. They were married on October 28, 1911, in Bradford,
Yorkshire, England.
Donald enjoyed football in hunting in his spare time. He spent two years with the Army Cadets at school. He worked as an apprentice
electrician for Royal Electric Company in Lethbridge in 1942, as an apprentice plumber for G.A. Baxter in 1942-43, and as a roofer for
Stewart & Philipps.
After his RCAF enlistment and training in Canada, Donald embarked in Halifax, Nova Scotia for departure to the UK on October 22nd,
arriving in England on October 30, 1943. He was assigned to No. 16 Operational Training Unit (16 OTU) on November 16, 1943, and
trained with the group until February 29, 1944, at RAF Upper Heyford in Oxfordshire, England.
He was subsequently transferred to the RAF’s No. 51 Base, a satellite station of RAF Swinderby in Lincolnshire, from February 29th
until the beginning of June. He was assigned to No. 9 RAF Squadron on June 9, 1944.
On June 22, 1944, Sergeant Redshaw served as an Air Gunner aboard an Avro Lancaster bomber ME 704. The aircraft was lost while
participating in a night mission targeting Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
Donald’s body was recovered August 22, 1944, and he is interred at the Amersfoort (Old Leusden) General Cemetery.
