Henry Wilbert Huhtala was the son of Harold Agustus Scanlom (1894-1982) and Clara Chesley (Mathews) Scanlonm (1899-1970) of
Kirkland Lake, Ontario.
Douglas Milton Scanlon completed his formal education in Kirkland Lake, Ontario between 1933 and 1941. Prior to his
enlistment he was employed as an apprentice machinist with Heath and Sherwood Ltd., between 1941 and 1943. His sport
interest was boxing.
Douglas began his training in Canada on August 18, 1943. While training at No. 10 Bombing and Gunnery School , RCAF Station
Mount Pleasant. On December 31, 1943, Fairey Battle No.2057, a drogue towing aircraft had three drogues hang up casing the
plane to stall and crash three miles south of RCAF Mt. Pleasant, PEI. Aircraftman 2nd Class Henry Wilbert Huhtala, aged 18,
Flight Sergeant William James Pearson, aged 20, and Aircraftman 2nd Class, Douglas Milton Scanlon were killed.
Aircraftman 2nd Class, Douglas Milton Scanlon is buried in the Ottawa (Beechwood) Cemetery, Ontario.
