Remembering World War II Royal Canadian Air Force Willis Eugene Spinks
Willis Eugene Spinks Flight Sergeant Service No.: R/183116 Royal Canadian Air Force 44 (RAF) Squadron Died: June 22, 1944 Age: 19 Born in Brooklyn, Queens Co., Nova Scotia, on October 18, 1924. Flight Sergeant Spinks enlisted on October 19, 1942, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Following training in Canada he departed for overseas on August 26, 1943 and arrived in the United Kingdom on September 1, 1943. On April 30, 1944, he was assigned to 44 RAF Squadron at RAF Dunholme Lodge, Lincolnshire. On the night of June 21, 1944, Flight Sergeant Spink was an air gunner on Lancaster III ME803 that took off from RAF Dunholme Lodge to carry out a bombing attack on the oil refinery at Wesseling, Germany. The aircraft failed to return from the operation. The aircraft was shot down by a German night fighter with the loss of all eight members of the crew near Lutselus (Limburg) Begium. They are buried in the Genk Communal Cemetery, Belgium Canadian Virtual War Memorial
