Robert first enlisted at Yarmouth on March 13, 1916 at the age of 17; however, was discharged at
Aldershot, NS on July 2, 1916. He served with the 219th Battalion for some seven months.
Determined to serve, he re-enlisted on June 21, 1917 in Halifax at the age of 18 to serve with the
Royal Canadian Garrison Artillery for one year and four months with a Service Number of 8176. On June
22, 1918 with a Service Number of 1274219 as an active Militiaman on duty he became part of the
Canadian Expeditionary Force. Records dated December 11, 1918 lists his date of birth as 1901. He was
now 5 feet, 8 inches in height.
