His mother was born in Salmon River, Digby Co., NS, and his father was born in Tusket, Yarmouth Co., NS. The family lived in Pleasant Lake, Yarmouth Co. His two brothers also served in the First World War with Canadian Expeditionary Forces. His brother Private Clement Charles Jeffery served with the 49th Regiment and was killed in action on August 25, 1917, during the assault on Hill 70 at Loos, France. His brother Corporal Joseph Bunker ‘Job’ Jeffery served with the 85th Battalion and died of wounds on October 4, 1918. John William Jeffery suffered a gun shot wound or gun shrapnel wound to the head while in France in 1916. John survived the war, was demobilised March 11, 1919, and discharged March 15, 1919. He died at the age of 68 on June 3, 1957. John is interred at the Highland Plains Cemetery in Pleasant Lake, Yarmouth Co., NS.
