Archibald Kinney was the son of John Wentworth Kinney (1876-1954) and Mary Josephine (Muise) Kinney (1870-
1936), of Yarmouth, NS. He was the brother of Gertrude May Kinney (1898–1974), Frank Kinney (1900-1917),
and Lydia Mary (Kinney) Muise (1903-1987) and half-brother of Harry Blades (b. 1893). Some records and some
family members record their surname as Kenny and Kenney.
Archibald’s brother Private Frank Kinney served with the 64th and 25th Battalion during WWI and died April
28, 1917, during the Battle of Arras at Arleux-en-Gohelle.
Archibald enlisted December 23, 1916, in Saint John, New Brunswick (Service Number 666902) with the 165th
Battalion.
On March 22, 1917, he was listed as absent and was struck off strength on March 25, 1917. He was to have
embarked Canada on the SS Metagama at Halifax on March 25, 1917. He had reported his date of birth as 1896
at enlistment, yet he was born in 1899. Rather than being 20, he was only 17 years old.
Archibald volunteered with the 1st Depot Battalion of the Nova Scotia Regiment at Halifax on January 18,
1918, (Service No. 3180046), and completed his medical at Aldershot, Kings Co., NS, on September 19, 1918.
He was struck off strength October 19, 1918 and did not serve overseas.
