Adelbert ‘Delbert’ Perrin Dunn was the son of Fenwick Lamarchant Dunn (1853-1939) and Geneve
Jane (Wade) Dunn (1856-1943), the brother of William Howard G. Dunn (1877-1900), Clarissa Dunn (b.
1878), Lemerchant Wade Dunn (1882-1964) Madge T Dunn (1889-1984), Alfred Dunn (1891–1901),
Clarence Dunn (1893-1895), Arthur Augustus Dunn (1896-1966), Fenwick Hiram Dunn (1898-1980),
and the husband of Georgina (Doucette) Dunn (1891-1944). Some records list Adelbert’s middle name
as ‘Parent.’
Adelbert’s older brother William, a seaman, died with the loss of SS City of Monticello of the Yarmouth
Steamship Co. off Yarmouth on November 10, 1900.
Two of his brothers served during the First World War with Canadian Expeditionary Forces. Fenwick
Hiram Dunn served with the 64th Battalion, the 40th Battalion, and the Seaforth Highlanders, and
Arthur Augustus Dunn served with the 1st Brigade, Canadian Garrison Artillery, and the 9th Siege
Battery
in Canada.
Adelbert married Georgina Doucette of Tusket, Yarmouth Co., NS, on July 8, 1909. He was employed
at the time as a cooper (a maker or repairer of casks and barrels).
Adelbert enlisted in October of 1915, and served in Canada, England, and France during the First
World War. He served with the 1st Canadian Siege Battery. 1st Canadian Siege Battery was the third
Artillery Heavy and Siege Battery to arrive in England; arriving on November 30, 1915. It became the
97th Canadian Siege Battery, Canadian Siege Brigade on February 24, 1916.
Adelbert wounded in action on October 22, 1916, of shrapnel wounds to his neck, shoulder and right
leg near Dannes / Camiers in the Pas-de-Calais, Hauts-de-France. He was admitted to the No. 18
General Hospital at Dannes Camiers on October 23, 1916, the No. 6 Convalescent Depot at Étaples on
October 26th, and the No. 5 Convalescent Depot at Cayeux on December 19th. He was discharged
from medical care on December 29, 1916, and rejoined his unit on January 2, 1917.
On January 6, 1917, the nomenclature of all Canadian Siege Batteries was changed, and the 97th
Canadian Siege Battery became the 1st Overseas Siege Battery serving in the 1st Brigade Canadian
Garrison Artillery for the duration of the war. Adelbert continued to serve throughout 1917 and 1918
but was admitted to a Field Ambulance unit on December 21, 1918, with gastritis and then suffered
from influenza while in service in February 1919. After his return to Canada in the spring of 1919,
Adelbert was discharged May 1, 1919.
Adelbert died at the age of 79 on April 23,
1964, at the Western King’s Memorial
Hospital in Berwick, Kings Co., NS, and is
interred at the Mountain Cemetery, in
Yarmouth, NS.
