Elwin Herman Goodwin was the son of William Roy Goodwin (1890-1960) and Eva Eileen Goodwin (1903-
1964) of Central Argyle, Yarmouth Co., Nova Scotia. He was the brother of William Leroy (1924-1996),
Forrest Alton (1926-1986), Gerald Arthur (1927-1986), Charles Ronald (1934-2005), George Patrick (1935-
1951), Edgar Gordon (1937-2001), Vera Lorraine (1929-1947), Dorothy Anne (b.1932), and Elizabeth
Sharon (b.1944).
His father, William Roy Goodwin, served in WWI with the 6th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery. (Service No.
488744). His brothers, William Leroy Goodwin served in Canadian Army during WWII, and Gerald Arthur
Goodwin served with the Canadian Army in Korea.
Private Goodwin was killed in action during Operation Commando while serving
with ‘D’ Company’s advance to Hill 187.
“As part of the Canadian brigade's advance, 2 PPCLI attack Chinese
positions atop Hill 187. After a two hour fight, 28 Chinese are killed and
four are taken prisoner for the loss of one PPCLI soldier killed and ten
wounded. The positions seized by the Canadians are on a line of hills
overlooking the Sami-ch'on River and a smaller valley, the Nabu-ri, to its
north.“ (Veterans Affairs Canada)
Elwin Herman Goodwin is buried in the United Nations Cemetery (Busan), South Korea (Plot 20. Row 5.
Grave 1169).
United Nations Memorial Cemetery is the only United Nations cemetery in the world, this memorial
cemetery in Korea is a burial ground for United Nations Command casualties of the Korean War.
A Memorial stone Private Elwin Herman Goodwin is located near the center of the family plot at the Mount
Pleasant Argyle Historic Baptist Church Cemetery.
