Behind each name is a story. Edward James Wright was determined to enlist and
at his death in 1945, military officials were shocked to learn he was just sixteen
years of age …. Eric Fedi was sixteen when he enlisted in 1942. A friend helped
to falsify his birth certificate which claimed he was born two years earlier … Both
Eric Fedi and Leonard Norman Jonasson would die when their aircraft crashed
while on bombing operations over Europe … John Frederick Dowding, Joseph
Raymond Pollon, Eric James Post would all die in training accidents during training
in England at seventeen … Lars Cyril Jansonn would die when his aircraft crashed
in fog during training in Canada … Joseph Russell Arnold Kirlin would only serve for
a short time while training in Canada; he would die of illness … Lorne Thomas
Moyes would drown in a canoe accident shortly after enlisting ….

The names of some 17,000 World War II Royal Canadian Air Force men and women who lost their lives between 1939 and 1947 can be found inscribed on Memorials and Headstones. Among them are 100 who died at the age of sixteen,
seventeen, and eighteen. Some died during air operations, others from training accidents, or illness.
Eighty-nine eighteen year old Royal Canadian Air Force
personnel would lose their lives during WWII.
Their names are found on grave markers and Memorials
in Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands,
and in the United Kingdom.
"Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds -
and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of -
wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence.
Hovering there I've chased the shouting wind along
and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air.
"Up, up the long delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,
where never lark, or even eagle, flew;
and, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
the high untrespassed sanctity of space,
put out my hand and touched the face of God."
… Pilot Officer
John Gillespie Magee
